R404a (HFC) - Current Standard

  • ODP (Ozone Depletion): 0 (ozone-safe)
  • GWP (Global Warming): 3,922
  • Status: Widely available, subject to HFC phasedown
  • Performance: Excellent, well-proven in ice machines

R449A (HFO/HFC Blend) - Recommended Upgrade

  • ODP: 0
  • GWP: 1,397 (65 percent lower than R404a)
  • Status: Increasing adoption, near drop-in replacement for R404a
  • Performance: Comparable capacity, slightly lower at high ambient temperatures

R22 (HCFC) - PHASED OUT

  • ODP: 0.055 (ozone-depleting)
  • Status: Banned in EU since 2015, global phase-out mandated by Montreal Protocol
  • Warning: Do NOT purchase R22 machines for any export market

Future Alternatives

  • Ammonia (R717): Natural refrigerant, zero GWP. Ideal for large plants (20+ tons/day). DAXTRO developing ammonia systems for 2027 release
  • CO2 (R744): Natural refrigerant, GWP 1. Suitable for cascade systems in medium-capacity applications
