R404a: The Current Industry Standard
R404a is an HFC refrigerant widely used in medium and low-temperature commercial refrigeration. It has been the standard choice for industrial ice machines for over two decades.
- Type: HFC (Hydrofluorocarbon)
- ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential): 0 (ozone-safe)
- GWP (Global Warming Potential): 3,922
- Pros: Excellent performance, widely available, well-understood
- Cons: High GWP, subject to phasedown under Kigali Amendment
- Status: Still available but prices rising as production quotas decrease
R449A: The Drop-In Replacement
R449A is an HFO/HFC blend designed as a near drop-in replacement for R404a with significantly lower GWP. DAXTRO has qualified R449A across its product line.

- GWP: 1,397 (65% lower than R404a)
- Pros: Lower GWP, similar performance, reduced carbon footprint
- Cons: Slightly lower capacity at high ambient, mildly flammable (A1)
- Status: Increasingly adopted, recommended by DAXTRO for new installations
R22: Phased Out Globally
R22 (HCFC-22) was the dominant refrigerant for decades but is now banned in most countries. Do NOT purchase ice machines using R22 for any export market.
- ODP: 0.055 (ozone-depleting)
- Status: Banned in EU since 2015, phased out in most countries by 2020-2030
- Risk: Cannot be serviced legally in most markets
Future Trends
The refrigeration industry is moving toward ultra-low GWP refrigerants:
- Natural Refrigerants: Ammonia (R717) for large plants, CO₂ (R744) for medium systems
- HFOs: R1234yf, R1234ze with GWP < 1
